Piano Lessons for Adults in Bellingham
Whether you’re returning to the piano after many years, beginning for the first time, or looking for focused coaching as an experienced player, adult lessons are built around your own musical goals.
My aim is to help adult students develop confident, expressive, and independent musicianship. Lessons balance technical skill, musical understanding, and creativity, with room for both disciplined work and genuine enjoyment of the music you want to play.

You do not need to follow a predetermined curriculum or work toward exams or performances unless those goals are meaningful to you.
Lessons are individualized to your interests, experience, and goals. Depending on what you’d like to accomplish, we will work on a combination of:
All of my teaching is informed by classical piano pedagogy. That doesn’t mean every student is expected to spend their time playing Bach, but it does mean I believe in giving adult students a strong musical foundation.
Alongside the repertoire you’re most interested in, we’ll work on fundamentals such as scales, chords, technique, rhythm, sight-reading, and music theory. I also make a point of exposing students to music from a range of styles and periods, from Baroque and Classical repertoire through Romantic, twentieth-century, and contemporary music.
My goal is to give adult students a well-rounded musical education that leads to real independence at the piano. The more you understand how music is built and how the instrument works, the more freedom you have to eventually learn, interpret, and play the music you truly want.

FLEXIBILITY & CONVENIENCE
Practice expectations
Regular practice is essential for making progress. Most adults should plan to practice at least five days per week, typically 30+ minutes per day depending on goals and repertoire.
Do I need a piano?
Yes. Students need regular access to a functioning acoustic piano and piano bench at home.
If you’re currently looking for an instrument, I’m happy to offer guidance before you purchase one.
Do adult student perform?
Only if you want to. Adult students are invited to informal studio soirées and other performance opportunities throughout the year, but participation is always optional.
Why private lessons?
One-on-one instruction means your repertoire, technique, and practice plan can be shaped around your goals and pace, with focused feedback and guidance at every step.

All prospective adult students begin with a 25-minute consultation lesson for $35.
We’ll spend some time at the piano, talk about your musical background and goals, and get a sense of how we work together. If you have previous experience, you’re welcome to bring something you enjoy playing. Beginning students do not need to prepare anything.
During the consultation, we’ll also schedule a brief follow-up phone call.
After the lesson, I’ll review my notes and consider which lesson structure would best support your goals and whether the studio feels like a good fit.
During the follow-up call, we can answer any remaining questions and make the final decision about moving forward together.

My teaching is rooted in classical piano pedagogy, and I don’t specialize in jazz or pop instruction. My focus is on developing strong technique, musicianship, reading, theory, and a broad understanding of piano repertoire.

I think of learning music much like learning a language: the more consistently you engage with it, the more fluent and independent you become. Progress looks different for every student and depends on previous experience, practice consistency, repertoire, and individual goals.
